A senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander threatened the United States with a regional response if the US continues to operate in the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran’s military said it was closing the strategic waterway and Washington said it had carried out new strikes inside Iran.

“Will you make the sacred Strait of Hormuz unsafe? We will turn the entire region into hell for you from across Iran,” Brig. Gen. Majid Mousavi, commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force, said, according to Iranian state-linked outlet WANA.

Mousavi said the warning was a response to recent US strikes and said Iran would act if what he called hostile action continued.

His comments came after Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters announced that the Strait of Hormuz had been closed to all vessels, including oil tankers and commercial ships. Iranian military authorities warned that vessels attempting to pass through the strait would be targeted.

Reuters reported that Iran’s top joint military command announced the closure after US attacks, calling it a major escalation because of the strait’s role in global energy shipments.

US Central Command disputed Iranian claims that the waterway had been shut and said commercial vessels were still moving through the area.

CENTCOM said none of its warships had been struck in the Strait of Hormuz, contradicting Iranian state media claims that US ships had been targeted by missiles and drones.

The US military said that American forces carried out “additional self-defense strikes” against multiple targets in Iran at the direction of President Donald Trump. US forces struck “Iranian military surveillance capabilities, communication systems, and air defense sites across Iran” with precision munitions, CENTCOM said.

“The strikes are in response to Iran’s unwarranted and continued aggression,” CENTCOM said. “US forces remain vigilant, lethal, and ready.”

The US said the targets posed threats to its forces and to international commercial ships transiting regional waters. The latest strikes followed US attacks a day earlier that CENTCOM said were carried out in response to Iran’s downing of a US Army Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz.
