President Donald Trump is seriously considering launching an air campaign against regime forces in Iran, US officials say, after security forces gunned down protesters at demonstrations across the country during an internet blackout.

A report published by The New York Times Saturday night cited multiple American officials who said that the president has been briefed on a number of new options for military strikes in Iran.

According to the report, Trump has yet to make a final decision on a possible attack, but he is said to be seriously considering strikes in response to the Iranian government’s violent crackdown on protesters.

The scenarios presented to the president include strikes limited to military targets in Iran, as well as options for hitting nonmilitary regime sites in the capital city.

Trump has repeatedly threatened to strike Iran in response to the use of deadly force against protesters.

On Saturday, the president took to his Truth Social account to offer American “help” to the protest movement.

“Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The USA stands ready to help!!!”
A day earlier, Trump warned that his administration is monitoring events in Iran “very, very closely,” and that the US would strike Iran “where it hurts” if the regime resumes “killing people as it did in the past.”
“I’ve made the statement very strongly that if they start killing people like they have in the past, we will get involved,” Trump told reporters on Friday.
On Sunday, the London-based anti-regime outlet Iran International reported that at least 2,000 protesters were shot and killed by regime forces during a 48-hour period after the internet blackout began.
Witnesses cited in the report said that large numbers of bodies of slain demonstrators had been seen at hospitals and makeshift facilities across the country.
Iran’s military signaled Saturday that it would join government efforts to crush the protest movement, issuing a statement vowing to “firmly safeguard national interests, strategic infrastructure, and public property,” while accusing Israel of fomenting the unrest.
