US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Washington has received assurances that Iran has halted the killing of protesters and is backing away from planned executions.

He delivered the comments as international pressure intensifies over the rising death toll and Tehran’s threats to execute prisoners.

Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump told reporters that he had been informed of a shift in Iran’s approach but did not reveal his sources publicly.

He described the information relayed to him as reliable, adding, “We have been notified pretty strongly — but we’ll find out what that all means… We’ve been told that the killing in Iran is stopping, and it’s stopped.”

The president noted that he had also been briefed on executions that authorities were believed to be preparing for detained protesters. “There’s no plan for executions … I’ve been told that on good authority,” he said, adding, “I’m sure if it happens, we’ll all be very upset.”

Trump’s remarks came days after Iran’s foreign minister held discussions with Steve Witkoff, the president’s top aide — a rare point of contact even as tensions between the two governments remain high.

Rights organizations continue to report far higher casualty figures than those acknowledged by Tehran.

Groups monitoring the situation from abroad say the number of dead in more than two weeks of demonstrations is significantly above the Islamic Republic’s stated figure of 2,000, warning that the true toll may not yet be fully known.

Earlier on Wednesday, Tehran threatened to expedite executions as Trump renewed his declaration that the US would come to the aid of protesters.

European and Israeli officials told Reuters, also on Wednesday, that the US was planning to strike Iran within 24 hours, without indicating the exact location or scope of the strikes.
